Reading and Writing Skills:
In this classroom we support struggling readers and writers at the adolescent level. Daily, we work with reading strategies and encourage a safe reading environment. Students are encouraged to enjoy reading as a daily activity, and with this improve as strategic readers. Our goal is for students to be able to take these strategies to improve their reading comprehension to all courses at school.

Some of our strategies include a Buddy Reading program with one of Clearbrook Elementary School's grade 2 classes, as well as visits to the public library.

Resource Room:
We provide one on one academic and behavioral support for students who are struggling. We offer a caring and comfortable environment for students to improve academic skills and to meet course expectations. Crisis intervention, conflict resolution, mediation, and counselling is available to students. Students who need a quiet place to do homework or to hang out at lunch also use our room. We have a computer lab for students to type assignments using spell-check and to conduct research using the internet. The room has a multitude of texts and books for each subject area, as well as study guides, story tapes, and corresponding material. Students also use the Successmaker program to improve spelling, reading, and math skills.

Intellectual Disabilities/TMH/MMH:
In this classroom intellectually disabled students are provided with specially designed instructional programs to meet their educational needs. The educational programs emphasize knowledge and skills needed to function successfully in society. Instruction is provided in such areas as basic academics, motor coordination, speech and language development, self care, interpersonal relationships and vocational training.

These students spend about half of the day integrated into other classrooms such as P.E., Drama, Art, Foods, Woodworking and even Science and Math throughout the school . Integration in regular programs is an integral part of their inclusion into the school community and society.

An important aspect of the program is the assistance given to our students by community service peer tutors from our school. Benefits are experienced by both the peer tutors and the special needs students.

In the resource room, students receive individualized attention to practice functional math, language, cooking and computer skills. Much of the learning is community/life skills based to allow students to gain independence. One example is our holistic approach to cooking. Students are assisted with planning meals, making a grocery list, accessing the grocery store, shopping (locating) items to purchase, paying for the items, preparing the meal, serving, cleanup and budgeting.

Work experience programs (such as working in the cafeteria, library, school store and recycling) prepare students for taking a more independent role in society.

Learning is extended outside the classroom by participation in community excursions such as swimming, skating, and trips to local farms, fire stations, and the library. Students gain independence using public transportation and going on to work experience placements.
